What is Angel Share?
What is Angel Share?
To intensify the subtle flavors of wine, winemakers often store their products in oak barrels. Over time, some of the alcohol seeps through the grain of the oak staves and evaporates. The evaporating alcohol has come to be known as the "Angel Share" alluding to the belief that guardian angels watch over, and perhaps share, the wine as it ages.
Angel Share at the Washington Wine Industry Foundation provides an opportunity for those in the industry to contribute directly to a charity but through the Foundation so as to accumulate the width and breadth of positive works and good deeds. Angel Share allows the Foundation to serve as a clearinghouse to receive and disperse charitable contributions from the Washington wine industry as designated by the donor.
Established as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 2001, contributions processed through the Washington Wine Industry Foundation are tax deductible and collectively support and fund donor-designated needs and help preserve industry unity and cooperation.
