Scholarships are key to encouraging the future education of students in the fields of viticulture and enology.  Part of the foundation’s mission is to help coordinate, manage and promote scholarships and grants given by the wine grape industry, as well as to develop resources for new ones.  The foundation serves as an umbrella organization on behalf of the wine grape industry to ensure contributions made by the industry are carefully managed and fully recognized.

Walter J. Clore Scholarship

The Walter J. Clore Scholarship was established in 1997 by the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers (WAWGG) in honor of Dr. Clore's grape research and lifetime achievements in the field of viticulture and enology. Working with growers, Dr. Clore and his colleagues published information on grape varieties, diseases, insects, mineral nutrition, irrigation, cover crops, weed control and climatological effects, including winter injury. He tested various trellis designs, which eventually led to the widespread adoption of mechanical harvesting. More than any other individual, Dr. Clore has had a profound and lasting impact on the Washington wine industry. The scholarships are open to high school seniors planning to enroll in a college or university to study viticulture and/or enology. Also, college students currently enrolled in areas of study pertaining to the wine industry are eligible. Click HERE for the scholarship application.

Horse Heaven Hills Scholarship

The Horse Heaven Hills Wine Growers, through the Washington Wine Industry Foundation, is offering a $1,500 scholarship to be awarded to a student interested in the study of viticulture and/or enology.

The scholarship was established by members who are dedicated to promoting education of the grape growing and wine producing industry in Washington state.

John Farmer Scholarship

John's time spent in the industry made a big impact. In 1998, John took an unknown piece of land and turned it into Alder Ridge Vineyard, one of the biggest vineyards in the state, which produces some of the highest quality grapes in the state. He also played a signature role in establishing the Horse Heaven Hills appellation. John's personal touch when working with winemakers was much appreciated, and he will be dearly missed. The industry lost John in September of 2006. He was a great ambassador for the wine industry, and to honor his memory, the John Farmer Scholarship Fund was established with the Washington Wine Industry Foundation to be based on financial need.

The scholarship provides six awards: $2,000, $1,000, and four $500

S.W. (Bill) Preston Scholarship

The S.W. (Bill) Preston Scholarship, offered by Preston Premium Wines and Preston Vineyards through the Washington Wine Industry Foundation, is offering an annual $3,000 scholarship to be awarded to students interested in the study of viticulture or enology and who are enrolled or planning to enroll in such programs at a Washington college or university.

Bill Preston was a visionary in the young Washington wine industry helping to create infrastructure for the Washington Wine Institute to the Tri-Cities Wine Festival…even to the extent of monetarily supporting the Festival in hard times.  This long-running wine festival is now over 30 years old.  Bill has been recognized by his peers for his contributions including being the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers as well as the first recipient of the Legends of Washington Hall of Fame.  He has also been named to the Ag Hall of Fame at the Pasco Chamber of Commerce.

The Preston family hopes the person receiving the S.W. (Bill) Preston Scholarship will enjoy the wine industry as much as Bill did and continue to promote and enhance this agricultural phenomenon in Washington State.
